What do you do when things go wrong?

I love being a coach to others and appreciate any opportunity to give my perspective to people who are looking for advice in their careers. Frequently I am asked the question, “What do you do when things go wrong?”

I have answered that question and variations of it more times than I can count over the years. After over a decade of being an entrepreneur and answering that question many times, I think I have my best answer. I keep going.

I realize my answer isn’t very sexy or complex, that is the point. More often than not I think the simple solution is the best solution. And my simple solution is – keep going!

There aren’t many definites in life. I’ve heard the saying, “The only definites in life are death and taxes.” That may also be true, but in business, I have learned some additional definites: 1. Things won’t go according to plan. 2. I will hit my goals regardless.

I know things won’t go perfectly. I have accepted that. I also know that things going wrong occasionally won’t stop me from getting where I need to go. How do I know I will get there? Because my goals are important to me. My goals are so important to me that I am willing to adapt to setbacks and adversity as often as I need to.

How do I get past things going wrong? I look over them and focus on my goals.
